"FROM
LUNAR HABITATS TO RURAL HOSPITALS – CHANGING
THE FUTURE OF HEALTH CARE WITH SPACE EXPLORATION TECHNOLOGIES"
Dafydd
(Dave) Rhys Williams, MD
Astronaut,
Canadian Space Agency
(Vancouver
Island Room)
Pushing
the edge of the envelope in human space exploration drives
the development of new exciting technologies that enable
humans to travel farther and stay longer in space. Over
the next decade the space faring nations will transition
from using the International Space Station as a research
and technology development platform to returning humans
to the Moon. Delivering health care in an isolated lunar
habitat has many challenges similar to those in rural
geographically isolated environments on earth. Innovative
tele-health technologies, including the use of tele-robotic
surgery, are currently being developed and evaluated
in space analogue environments on earth. In looking to
the future of space exploration, the footsteps back to
the Moon and on to Mars will captivate and inspire current
and future generations. The terrestrial application of
the enabling technologies may change the way we live
on earth.
